The government of Uttar Pradesh is contemplating the introduction of a Water Metro service in Ayodhya, Varanasi, and Prayagraj as part of its smart urban mobility initiatives, which aim to enhance tourism and alleviate road congestion.
Initially, a comprehensive feasibility study will be undertaken to evaluate the technical and financial viability of the project. Drawing inspiration from Keralaās Kochi Water MetroāIndiaās inaugural electric battery-powered boat transport systemāthe proposed service is expected to function both within cities and between them, thereby enhancing connectivity along the Ganga, Saryu, and Yamuna rivers.
This initiative is anticipated to provide an eco-friendly, efficient, and picturesque mode of transportation, thereby reducing air pollution and mitigating traffic congestion. Kochi Metro Rail, the entity responsible for implementing Keralaās Water Metro, is likely to offer consultancy for this project.
Chief Secretary SP Goyal is scheduled to meet with KMRL officials to deliberate on the feasibility. This initiative is in line with the stateās vision to foster sustainable river-based transport and tourism, transforming these rivers into modern, clean transportation corridors while maintaining their cultural importance.
