Dump construction waste at designated spots: MCG commissioner

The MCG officials said that the private firm, which operates Basai plant, can collect C&D waste only within 15 km radius as per their agreement.

In order to address the growing complaints of the construction and demolition (C&D) waste lying across the city, MCG commissioner has directed the officials to ensure that the waste is collected from these points and dumped at the designated spots near the Basai plant.

The MCG officials said that the private firm, which operates Basai plant, can collect C&D waste only within 15 km radius as per their agreement, so the MCG staff will be provided trolleys to collect this waste and dump at the designated points falling in the 15km radius of the Basai plant so that the private firm can take this waste to the C&D plant.

MCG earlier had given the contract of collecting C&D waste to a separate private firm, however it currently does not have a firm to collect and transport the waste. As a stop-gap arrangement, a four-member panel was formed on March 23 to look into the complaints.

The panel had proposed that either the private firm processing the C&D waste should collect the waste or another private firm be given the work for a short span of time. However, no such arrangement has been made and now the civic body officials have been directed to ensure that the waste is picked up.

“The matter of C&D waste management during a recent meeting held for the review of solid waste management, property IDs etc.,was convened by the MCG commissioner. When the complaints of the C&D waste came up for discussion in the meeting, the commissioner said that the scope of the private agency that operates the Basai plant is to collect waste within 15 km radius, so it was directed that MCG staff will collect waste lying at different points in the city and dump it at the designated points falling in that radius,” said a senior MCG official privy to the matter. He added that the commissioner has also directed officials to conduct a survey to identify the areas across the city where C&D waste is dumped.

The private firm which was given the contract to lift the construction waste had stopped working after a probe was initiated against the them.

“MCG does not have a proper roadmap for C&D waste collection. The Gurgaon-Faridabad, Golf Course Road Extension road is full of C&D waste. MCG should have contractual vendors for each zone so that the collection is done properly,” said Vaishali Rana Chandra, a city-based environmentalist.
