Chhattisgarh offers 50% rebate on property registration for women

The Chhattisgarh government has introduced a 50% discount on registration fees for properties registered under women’s names. This decision, approved under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and published in the official gazette on Wednesday, is effective immediately.

Officials indicated that this initiative aims to motivate families to register immovable properties in women’s names, thereby bolstering their economic security and social status. The government anticipates that this rebate will gradually increase women’s involvement in property ownership, which is a crucial measure of financial independence.

Chief Minister Sai referred to this decision as a “historic step” towards empowering women, asserting that land and property ownership boosts confidence and ensures long-term security. “An empowered woman not only strengthens her family but also fortifies the state,” he remarked.

Finance Minister O P Choudhary recognized that the rebate is expected to have an estimated revenue impact of approximately Rs 153 crore, but he characterized it as a “strategic social investment.” He emphasized that the long-term advantages of enhanced financial inclusion and asset ownership for women will surpass the immediate fiscal implications.

As per the gazette notification, any document pertaining to the transfer of immovable property executed in favor of a woman will qualify for a flat 50% reduction in the applicable registration fee. This initiative positions Chhattisgarh among the states striving to utilize fiscal incentives to combat gender inequality in property ownership, with officials noting that the effects will be closely observed in the forthcoming years.
