The Uttar Pradesh government has sought permission from the Union rural development ministry to let the returning migrants register themselves as eligible beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Rural (PMAY-R) housing scheme, as alot of them find themselves shelterless after returning to their native places.
It has written a letter to the ministry, urging it to reopen the Awaas+ website, which surveys people who were not covered under the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011, for 15 days.
This will allow such workers, along with many other deserving beneficiaries who have not been able to register themselves for the Centre’s affordable rural housing scheme, to register, said the letter.
“We are expecting a positive reply from the Centre,” state rural development commissioner Ravindra Nayak told ET.
The letter, a copy of which was seen by ET, said a lot of migrants coming back to their native villages are finding themselves without a proper home and have to find shelter in public spaces or put themselves up at their relatives’.
