Telangana government allocates Rs 11,917 crore for 2-bhk project

The government had allocated a meagre Rs 1,005 crore in 2019-20 budget for the project. Over one lakh houses in and around GHMC area alone are likely to be completed before elections to the civic body.

After having drawn severe criticism for not releasing adequate funds to the two-bed room housing project for the homeless poor in the past six years, chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao-led TRS government has allocated Rs 11,917 crore to the housing department in the budget for 2020-2021 fiscal.

The government had allocated a meagre Rs 1,005 crore in 2019-20 budget for the project.

With this huge allocation in 2020-21 budget, the good news for homeless poor is that their six-year long wait and dream of becoming owners of “dignified housing” in the form of 2-bhk units — an election promise made by chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao in 2014 poll campaign — has shown signs of materialising.

Over one lakh houses in and around GHMC area alone are likely to be completed before elections to the civic body. Polls to GHMC are likely to be held by year end or early 2021.

Currently, construction on majority of the total sanctioned 2.72 lakh 2-bhk housing units is nearing completion in the state. Contractors had stopped work at several places over non-payment of bills. The project requires over Rs 9,000 crore to be completed.

CM KCR had dropped indications of TRS government being committed to fulfil its poll promise of providing “2-bhk dignified housing” to the homeless poor in the state assembly on Saturday itself.

Stating that the TRS government promises only those things, which it can fulfil and that 2-BHK project was one among them, KCR had said the party has been delivering every promise made by it to the people of Telangana in its election manifesto. “The 2020-2021 budgetary allocations will make this amply clear even in case of 2-BHK project,” he said in the assembly on Saturday, while replying to Congress members allegations on TRS-government’s failure to complete the much-delayed housing project.

The KCR-led TRS government has decided to fulfil its promise made in 2018 assembly elections manifesto of giving Rs 5 lakh each one lakh eligible families owning lands to construct 2-bhk houses.

This promise was made by TRS as the government was finding it difficult to get suitable land to expand the beneficiary list for 2-BHK housing project.

Those who have own lands but do not have pucca houses and are eligible for 2-BHK units, will be given Rs 5 lakh each in 2020-21 financial year.
