Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system at the Mundka-Bakkarwala plaza located on Delhi’s Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). This important enhancement introduces a barrier-less toll collection method, enabling vehicles to pass through without the need to stop.
By utilizing FASTag and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, the system is designed to significantly alleviate congestion, save travel time, enhance fuel efficiency, and reduce vehicular emissions for daily commuters in and around the national capital.
The MLFF system represents a fully contactless and barrier-free approach to toll collection. Vehicles are no longer required to decelerate or halt at toll plazas. The system automatically identifies the FASTag associated with the vehicle and deducts the toll fee while it continues to move.
In instances of insufficient balance, an invalid FASTag, or technical difficulties, an Electronic Notice (E-Notice) is issued, allowing users a period of 72 hours to complete the payment. This marks the second significant implementation of MLFF in the nation, following the successful introduction on the Surat-Bharuch stretch of NH-48 in Gujarat. The new system on UER-II is anticipated to provide substantial relief to daily commuters. The primary advantages include:
– No waiting time at toll plazas
– More fluid and rapid traffic flow
– Decreased fuel consumption and lower pollution levels
– Enhanced overall driving experience on one of Delhi’s key corridors
The Mundka-Bakkarwala toll plaza will now function as a fully automated facility, representing another advancement in India’s transition towards modern, technology-driven highway infrastructure.
During the launch in Gujarat, Gadkari highlighted that barrier-less tolling would enhance the “Ease of Living” and facilitate the “Ease of Doing Business.” With its introduction in Delhi, the system is now expanding into urban corridors, promising improved connectivity for both city traffic and adjacent areas.
The government plans to gradually expand MLFF across more national highways, aiming to create a seamless, efficient, and transparent tolling network nationwide.
