LONDON: Apple has unveiled Apple Music Hall, a new 600-capacity live music venue located within London’s Battersea Power Station. Scheduled to open later this year, the venue will become Apple’s first permanent live performance space.

The venue is positioned alongside Apple’s offices and overlooks Turbine A at the northern end of the historic power station. It combines a flexible performance area with recording, mixing, broadcasting and radio facilities.

Apple’s in-house team, led by Apple Places vice president Kristina Raspe, designed the music hall with references to the original architecture of Battersea Power Station.

The design retains the industrial character of the former power station while introducing new elements associated with Apple’s music facilities.

Key design features include:

  • Brick walls surrounding the performance space
  • Exposed structural steel joists at the rear of the venue
  • Four illuminated, streamlined arches across the music hall
  • Bronze Art Deco-inspired balconies positioned between the arches
  • Box-like viewing areas overlooking the performance space
  • Interior details referencing the original Art Deco character of Battersea Power Station

The combination of brickwork, exposed steel and decorative arches connects the new venue with the industrial and architectural history of the building.

Apple Music Hall has been designed to accommodate different types of performances and audience arrangements.

The venue includes an 11.5-metre-wide stage and can be configured according to the requirements of individual events.

The available formats include:

  • All-seated performances
  • All-standing performances
  • Mixed seated and standing arrangements
  • Different stage and audience configurations
  • Live performances supported by integrated recording and broadcast equipment

The flexible arrangement is intended to allow artists and production teams to adapt the space to different performance requirements.

The venue incorporates dedicated technology for live sound, recording and content production. A 48-speaker spatial sound system has been installed within the performance space.

The venue also includes 16 hardwired cameras that can capture performances for video production and broadcasting.

Apple says the integrated systems allow a performance to be used for multiple forms of content production.

These capabilities include:

  • Spatial Audio recording
  • Broadcast-ready audio mixes
  • Multicamera video production
  • Live performance capture
  • Professional recording and mixing

This means that a performance can be recorded for audiences beyond those attending the live event.

A dedicated production facility is located alongside the main venue. It contains two professional-standard recording and mixing studios.

The facility allows recording and post-production activities to take place within the same building as live performances.

The production spaces are intended to support:

  • Professional music recording
  • Audio mixing
  • Spatial Audio production
  • Performance post-production
  • Broadcast preparation
  • Video production associated with live events

The arrangement brings performance and production facilities together rather than separating them across different locations.

Apple Music Radio has also been relocated to Battersea Power Station. The radio station will broadcast from the building alongside the new music venue and production facilities.

The relocation adds another music-related operation to Apple’s presence at the site.

The building will therefore accommodate several connected activities, including:

  • Live music performances
  • Music recording
  • Audio mixing
  • Spatial Audio production
  • Multicamera video capture
  • Radio broadcasting

Apple Music Hall has been developed alongside Apple’s European headquarters at Battersea Power Station.

The headquarters occupies the centre of the former power station and was designed by Foster + Partners. Apple already has a retail presence within the building through its store located in the former turbine halls.

The new venue adds a dedicated cultural and entertainment function to Apple’s existing facilities at the site.

Battersea Power Station is one of London’s most recognisable industrial buildings. Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott, the former power station remained derelict for around four decades before its redevelopment.

Architecture studio WilkinsonEyre was involved in the refurbishment completed in 2022. The redevelopment transformed the former power station into a mixed-use destination while retaining significant elements of its original architecture.

The complex now includes:

  • Residential apartments
  • Restaurants
  • Retail spaces
  • Commercial offices
  • Apple’s European headquarters
  • An Apple Store
  • Cultural and entertainment facilities

Apple Music Hall adds another contemporary use to the historic structure while retaining visible references to its industrial past.

The Apple Music Hall project combines a contemporary music-production facility with the existing architectural character of Battersea Power Station.

Its design retains brick walls and exposed structural elements while introducing illuminated arches and bronze balconies inspired by the building’s Art Deco heritage.

The venue’s technical infrastructure also extends beyond conventional concert facilities, incorporating spatial audio, recording, mixing and multicamera production capabilities.

With a capacity of 600 people, an 11.5-metre-wide stage, 48-speaker spatial sound system, 16 cameras, two recording and mixing studios and a dedicated Apple Music Radio facility, the new venue brings multiple aspects of Apple’s music operations together within Battersea Power Station.
