The West Bengal government has restricted the registration of land sale and purchase documents in nine mouzas of Nadia district as part of the land acquisition process for the proposed Kalyani Greenfield Airport. The planned airport is expected to be developed across around 2,000 acres and serve as a second commercial airport for the Kolkata Metropolitan Area.
Registration officers have been directed not to register documents related to property transactions in the identified areas. The temporary restriction is intended to facilitate the acquisition process and prevent changes in land ownership while the government works towards assembling the required land for the airport project.
The nine identified mouzas are Birpara, Char Jadubati, Ganga Mohanpur, Char Madhusuanpur, Sarati, Murutipur, Umapur, Iswaripur and Kalyani.
Government Owns Around 240 Acres
The state government already owns approximately 240 acres within the identified area. This includes a 172-acre government-owned brick field. The remaining land required for the proposed airport will have to be acquired from private landowners.
Kalyani and Birpara account for a significant portion of the land requirement, while Sarati and Murutipur are also among the areas identified for acquisition. Land in Umapur has also been included in the proposed airport development area.
The restriction on registration is part of the preparatory process for acquiring the remaining land. By limiting transactions in the identified areas, the government can maintain a defined land pool while the acquisition process progresses.
Airport Planned North of Kolkata
The proposed Kalyani Greenfield Airport is planned in Nadia district, around 50 km north of Kolkata. The project was announced in the West Bengal Budget for 2026-27 presented in June.
The proposed facility is intended to provide another commercial aviation option for the Kolkata Metropolitan Area. The development is also linked to the state’s plans to expand aviation infrastructure and increase airport capacity in the wider metropolitan region.
The airport would be developed as a greenfield facility, meaning the project would involve the creation of a new airport site rather than expansion of an existing commercial airport.
Land Acquisition Process Underway
With the government having identified the land parcels required for the project, the acquisition of privately owned land will be a key step before construction can proceed.
The approximately 240 acres already under government ownership will form part of the proposed airport site. Additional land will need to be acquired from private owners across the identified mouzas to meet the overall requirement of around 2,000 acres.
The restriction on land registration means property transactions involving the identified areas will be subject to the government’s directions during this phase of the project.
Once the required land is assembled and other project processes are completed, the proposed Kalyani airport is expected to add a new commercial aviation facility to the Kolkata region.
The development would also add to the number of commercial airports serving a major metropolitan area. If completed as proposed, Kolkata would join metropolitan regions such as the National Capital Region and Mumbai Metropolitan Region, which have more than one commercial airport serving their wider urban areas.
