The KMC has established a deadline of May 27 for individuals who have recently received new illegal building notices within the last 24 hours. On Sunday, six buildings that were under construction were demolished, while several structures in Tiljala, Beleghata, and Kasba were issued KMC hearing notices, labeling them as illegal.

Additionally, some of these notices were directed at buildings that are already occupied by residents. Residents of one such building, Elite Primo, located on G J Khan Road in Tiljala, organized a protest, claiming that the developer misled them by asserting that the properties were authorized. A notice was also issued to five buildings in Beleghata, which included a restaurant.

The Tiljala-Topsia area is categorized as a ‘Red Zone’ for allegedly illegal buildings. Other regions with a similar designation include Garden Reach-Metiabruz, Rajabazar, Burrabazar, and areas adjacent to the EM Bypass. A civic official stated, “Approximately 70% of the buildings in Tiljala-Topsia have been constructed illegally over the past twenty years.”

Officials from the KMC department are diligently working to compile lists of illegal buildings that are slated for demolition. A building department official mentioned that KMC authorities have instructed the department to create a list and document the extent of deviations by developers or owners while keeping the KMC uninformed. “We will forward the list to the headquarters,” the official stated.

Ramu Yadav, a resident, expressed, “How are we supposed to know that a building, where we have resided for ten years, is illegal? If it is demolished, where will we go? Some of us intend to present the documents we possess to KMC officials.”
