The Belagavi City Corporation (BMC) has experienced a promising commencement to its property tax collections for the ongoing financial year, having amassed Rs 18.12 crore from April 1 to April 20, facilitated by a 5% early-payment discount.

This strong collection within a mere 20 days has significantly enhanced the corporation’s revenue base at the onset of the financial year. Officials anticipate that the momentum will continue to build until the end of April, as collections typically increase during the last week of the month.

The 5% discount, available from April 1 to 30, has encouraged taxpayers to settle their dues promptly. Civic officials have observed a notable rise in digital payments this year, with a growing number of citizens choosing to pay taxes via online methods such as net banking, UPI, and the corporation’s portal.

Despite being involved in essential tasks such as mapping for the voter list and conducting census work, revenue staff have sustained consistent recovery efforts. In the meantime, discussions are ongoing regarding the potential extension of the rebate period.

Last year, the state government prolonged the concession through May and June, providing relief to late taxpayers. Citizens are now expressing hopes for a similar extension this year, which could further enhance collections if granted.
