Chandigarh civic body receives Rs 42 crore property tax during rebate period

Out of around 1.42 lakh taxpayers in the city, 64,000 residential and 16,000 commercial property owners have deposited their tax in April and May.

The municipal corporation (MC) has received Rs 42.47 crore property tax during the two-month rebate period that ended on Wednesday, with a major chunk of Rs 1 crore each coming from Panjab University and the UT administration, Rs 88 lakh from the PGI and Rs 50 lakh from the civic body itself.

Out of around 1.42 lakh taxpayers in the city, 64,000 residential and 16,000 commercial property owners have deposited their tax in April and May.

Out of the total, Rs 26.89 crore has come from commercial properties, Rs 12.56 from residential properties, Rs 1.07 crore from “book entries” and Rs 1.95 crore through annual garbage collection charges paid with the tax.

Defaulters will now have to pay 25% penalty on the tax and 12% interest. Sources said the civic body will begin to calculate the penalty and interest, and start sending notices in the next few weeks. Action like sealing of properties will be taken in case the tax is not deposited.

The MC had offered 20% rebate for residential properties and 10% for commercial ones.

The city has around 1.42 lakh properties — 1.12 lakh residential and 30,000 commercial — under the tax ambit. New properties had been added to the list in the financial year after the MC had conducted a survey.
