In order to alleviate the traffic congestion at critical junctions, to ensure smoother and more efficient movement of vehicles, constructing five new underpasses along the Gurugram Metro route is primarily necessary. The aim of these underpasses is to reduce delays that are caused by signal-controlled intersections, particularly benefiting heavy vehicles and commuters traveling to and from key areas such as Cyber City and Udyog Vihar. The project seeks to enhance last-mile connectivity and overall urban mobility by integrating these underpasses with the metro line, .
The underpasses are planned for the following locations:Sector 4/5 crossing on Railway Road
● Sheetla Mata Road junction
● Krishna Chowk
● Rezangla Chowk
● Palam Vihar Road and Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road junction
An estimated ₹500 crore has been allocated for this initiative, which will be executed by Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) in the second phase of the metro construction. As gurugram is the fast-paced developing city, the project has aligned with the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority’s (GMDA) broader Comprehensive Mobility Plan that aimed to create a seamless urban transit system.
This infrastructure development is aimed to reduce congestion and improve the overall flow of traffic, especially benefiting commercial vehicles which are basically used for construction and agricultural commercial work in the region.
How the construction of these underpasses is beneficial for commercial vehicles?
Construction of underpasses specifically for commercial vehicles like trucks have several benefits and importance:
1. Reduction of Congestion
● Improved Traffic Flow: By providing dedicated routes for large vehicles, underpasses help prevent slow-moving trucks from interfering with regular traffic, especially in busy urban or highway intersections.
● Smooth operations: Commercial vehicles can move without frequent stops or delays, leading to better logistics and delivery efficiency.
2. Enhanced Road Safety
● Reduced accidents: A huge number of road accidents may be avoided due to the construction of underpasses as Trucks are generally involved in road accidents because of the size and blind spots on roads.
● Fewer level crossings: The risk of collisions between trains and trucks is eliminated completely in areas where underpasses are built to avoid railway crossings.
3. Support for Economic Activity
● Efficient goods movement: Underpasses help reducing delays in deliveries that will benefit the industries, retailers, and consumers.
● Lowered transportation costs: Less delays helps saving on fuel due to the shorter routes.
4. Environmental Benefits
● Reduced emissions: By minimizing idling and congestion, underpasses help lower greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality.
5. Longevity of Infrastructure
● Less pressure on surface roads: The load of heavy trucks can certainly damage surface-level roads. Underpasses are built with materials and structures which handle heavy load of trucks more effectively.
6. Urban Planning
● Utilization of Land: The quality of urban life improves due to the re-routing of heavy vehicle traffic underground or away from populated areas as it helps free up surface space for pedestrians, bikes, and light vehicles.
In conclusion, underpasses constructed specifically for trucks enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability as these all are crucial for modern transportation infrastructure and economic growth.
