Two girders collapse at Metro Rail work site in Ramapuram

Two I-girders that were launched for the construction of the 3.15 km flyover as part of the Chennai Metro Rail’s phase II corridor in Manapakkam collapsed on Thursday night, June 12, 2025, resulting in the death of an individual riding a two-wheeler on the road beneath. Until late that night, police officers and Chennai Metro Rail personnel worked to remove the girders and recover the body of the deceased, whose identity had not yet been established.

At approximately 9:45 p.m., the I-girders fell from the viaduct in Manapakkam, causing significant traffic congestion in the vicinity for an extended period. The Chennai Metro Rail is in the process of constructing a double-deck corridor along Mount Poonamallee Road. The flyover, which links Mugalivakkam to MIOT Hospital, is being built on level 1, while the elevated section for corridor 5 (Madhavaram to Sholinganallur) of the Chennai Metro Rail is being developed on level 2.

As per the officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the girders had been launched just a week prior for the flyover project. The failure of one of the supporting A-frames led to the collapse of the girders. An investigation will be carried out to determine the cause of the incident, according to officials.
