Tamil Nadu to build 1 lakh houses under Rs 3,500 crore scheme

The state has released comprehensive guidelines to identify eligible beneficiaries and construct homes for individuals currently residing in huts under the Kalaignarin Kanavu Illam initiative.

The government has allocated 3,500 crore for the construction of 100,000 houses. According to the guidelines from the rural development and panchayat raj department, only households possessing patta, ownership documents, and legal inheritance will qualify for the scheme.

A recent survey has revealed approximately eight lakh huts within the state. Houses situated on objectionable poramboke land, those occupied by tenants, huts utilized for commercial purposes, structures with RCC or metal sheet roofs, and occupants who own alternative housing will be disqualified from the scheme.

An official stated that each house will have a minimum plinth area of 300 sqft, comprising a living room, kitchen, bedroom, toilet, and tiled roof, along with water and electricity connections. In grouped areas, the government will also provide essential infrastructure such as roads, street lighting, drinking water facilities, and public toilets.

The walls will be painted in rose blush, with camouflage brown in the middle and armor-colored joineries, as noted by the official. Additionally, an assistance of 12,000 will be granted under the Swachh Bharat Mission to each household for toilet construction in individual habitations. This scheme was initially introduced as the Kalaignar Veedu Vazhangum Thittam in 2010.

Officials also mentioned that the government is facilitating the PM-Janman scheme to build houses for nomads and scheduled tribes, emphasizing the objective of preventing encroachments and ensuring that everyone has access to a hygienic living environment.
