Salem division earns 7.3cr from ticket checking drives

The Salem division of southern railway earned 7.3 crore through ticket checking drives, during the first half of this financial year between April and September.

The Salem division of southern railway earned 7.3 crore through ticket checking drives, during the first half of this financial year between April and September.

Divisional railway manager (DRM) Pankaj Kumar Sinha said on Wednesday that ticket checking squad members usually conduct checks on board trains and at railway stations to detect malpractices.

“During such checks, they detect cases of people travelling without tickets, irregular travel, un-booked luggage, etc. and levy penalty accordingly,” the DRM said.

The DRM further said the ticket checking squads had detected 67,996 cases of ticketless travel and collected penalties amounting to 5.22 crore from the offenders. Similarly, 40,669 cases of irregular travel were also found and 2.06 crore collected as penalty from passengers.

The division also earned a revenue of 1.21 lakh from 205 passengers for carrying un-booked luggage and luggage exceeding the permitted limit.
