The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated the trial run of the newly built tunnel and underpasses along the Delhi segment of the Dwarka Expressway. This effort aims to mitigate persistent traffic congestion in the Delhi-Gurugram corridor, especially on National Highway 48 (NH-48), which experiences a daily traffic volume surpassing 300,000 vehicles.
The trial operations commenced on May 29, 2025, and are set to occur daily from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. This timeframe has been strategically selected to align with peak afternoon traffic hours, enabling authorities to evaluate real-time traffic flow and collect valuable feedback from commuters.
The trial includes a 3.6 km-long, eight-lane tunnel that connects the Dwarka Expressway to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, as well as a 1.5 km-long, two-lane tunnel that links the expressway to NH-48 towards Gurugram. Upon the successful conclusion of the trial phase, the tunnel is anticipated to be fully operational by June 5, 2025.
This advancement is expected to considerably decrease travel time between Delhi and Gurugram, offering a more efficient route for daily commuters and improving access to significant destinations, including IGI Airport and the proposed Global City in Gurugram. The Dwarka Expressway project exemplifies the government’s dedication to enhancing infrastructure and fostering sustainable urban development.
By establishing a dedicated, grade-separated corridor, the expressway seeks to alleviate traffic congestion, lower vehicular emissions, and promote smoother connectivity between Delhi and its satellite cities. As the trial run advances, commuters are encouraged to share their feedback with NHAI to ensure that the final implementation aligns with public needs and contributes to the overarching objective of creating a zero-net-carbon, eco-friendly, and equitable urban environment.
