About 24,000 defaulters yet to clear pending dues of Rs 85 crore to CHB

The list includes owners of small flats given under slum rehabilitation schemes; affordable rental housing schemes (ARHC), also given to slum dwellers ; commercial and residential flats in different sectors and colonies.

The Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) has prepared a list of around 24,000 defaulters yet to clear pending dues of around Rs 85 crore.

The list includes owners of small flats given under slum rehabilitation schemes; affordable rental housing schemes (ARHC), also given to slum dwellers ; commercial and residential flats in different sectors and colonies.

To start taking action, the CHB on Monday issued show-cause notice for cancellation to 11,641 allottees of small flats and ARHC flats. They in total owe Rs 48.27 crore to the CHB.

Initially, notices were sent to only those defaulters, who owe more than Rs 10,000. All the allottees were asked to clear their dues by March 25. In the coming days, notices will also be sent to commercial and residential flats’ defaulters.

CHB chief executive officer (CEO) Yashpal Garg said the CHB was left with no option but to initiate the process for cancellation of allotment of units.

“Once a unit is cancelled, the allottee is required to vacate it and if the appellate authority allows its restoration, the allottee is required to pay all the pending dues, interest and revival charges also,” he said.

Recently, the CHB had carried out exercise like uploading list of dues on the board’s website, issuing public notices, setting up special collection counters at Dhanas, Mauli Jagran, Maloya and CHB office complex, starting online payment facility and introducing payment facility at all e-sampark centres.

In 2020, the board had sent notices to more than 6000 allottees but only a few had cleared their dues. In 275 cases, the CHB had issued notices for cancellation. In June 2019, the CHB had organised special drive for collection of dues of small flats in the city.
