PMC offers 5-10% discount on property tax payment till June 30

The civic body has extended the deadline to pay property tax at discounted rates till June 30,providing relief to residents.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) offers a discount ranging from 5% to 10% to taxpayers who settle their dues by May 31 each year. However, for the financial year 2025-26, an additional month has been allowed. Civic officials indicated that this decision was made due to anticipated delays in the distribution of bills, which are affected by the calculations for a 40% tax discount.

Data reveal that approximately 1.25 million properties fall under the tax jurisdiction within PMC boundaries. Nearly half of the residents pay their taxes before May 31, contributing to a revenue of around Rs 1,000 crore in the first quarter of the fiscal year.

PMC officials said that the distribution of bills typically begins in April each year and is completed within a month; however, this year it may commence in May. They noted that the civic administration has reinstated a 40% tax discount for self-occupied properties. This discount was first introduced in 1970, but it was never officially recognized by any state government. Ultimately, central government auditors deemed the discount illegal, leading to its removal in the 2018-19 period. Following complaints from citizens and property owners, the discount was restored in the 2022-23 fiscal year.

Officials said that the proposal to extend the payment deadline was presented to PMC administrator and commissioner Rajendra Bhosale, who has given his approval.
