The initial operational segment of Chennai Metro Phase II, specifically the Poonamallee to Porur section along Corridor 4, is now anticipated to commence operations in January 2026, which marks a postponement from the previously set target of December.
As per the officials from Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL), this delay is attributed to the slower advancement of the construction of station entry and exit structures, in addition to outstanding statutory clearances. Essential approvals from the Railway Board and the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) are still pending.
The final requirement prior to the opening involves an inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), which is projected to occur in the third week of December, contingent upon the issuance of the necessary speed and ISI certificates.
In spite of these delays, CMRL officials express optimism, noting that over 93 percent of the construction work has been completed, and the entry and exit points at significant stations are expected to be finalized by the end of December. Once all regulatory approvals are obtained, the project will request an inauguration date from both the State and Central governments.
