Chandigarh: Pay property tax by September 30 or face action

After giving over two months to property taxpayers of all categories, the tax branch of the municipal corporation has started sending recovery notices to both residential and commercial property owners. They have to pay tax by September 30 or face punitive action.

In the first lot, the authority has sent around 900 recovery notices to defaulters, out of which around 500 have been issued to commercial and 400 to residential property owners.

Starting from northern sectors in residential areas, the authority sent notices from sectors 2 to 10 in the first lot after calculating their tax details. In the commercial segment, majority of the recovery notices were sent in areas of Manimajra, Burail, sectors 37, 38 and 48. Since the authority has also computerised details of majority of taxable properties, it has become quite easy for them to send notices.

“We have given sufficient time till September 30 to all these defaulter owners of residential and commercial properties to deposit their tax in the stipulated time period, otherwise strict action will be taken against them as per laid down norms, which can go up to sealing of the property in case of commercial property and inclusion of amount in water bill in case of residential property”, an MC official said.

“Now, all defaulter taxpayers of residential and commercial, will have to pay 25% penalty and 12% interest on the tax. The amount will keep piling up day by day, if they fail to pay their tax. Moreover, the delay period will be counted in the principal amount of the tax,” he added.
