Bengaluru accelerates white-topping work on major roads

Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure (B-Smile) Chief Engineer Raghavendra Prasad has declared that the white-topping project on key roads within the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) jurisdiction is being expedited.

This project encompasses 161.78 km divided into 16 packages, with a projected expenditure of Rs 1,700 crore, which includes Rs 800 crore from state government grants and Rs 900 crore sourced from Escrow funds.

Work has commenced on 104 roads, covering a distance of 145.68 km across 14 packages, at a total cost of Rs 1,487 crore. Furthermore, tenders are currently being processed for white-topping on an additional 14 roads, which will cover 16.1 km.

Contractors are required to enforce stringent safety protocols during the execution of the work. From 2016 to 2023, white-topping was successfully completed on 47 roads, totaling 124.17 km. Looking forward, a proposal is being developed for the white-topping of 488 km of roads scheduled between 2025 and 2028.

Nevertheless, challenges such as delays in securing permissions and issues related to the relocation of pipelines persist, although efforts for better coordination are in progress to accelerate the process.
