2% penalty if property tax paid after June 30-NMC

A civic official, while talking to TOI, said the NMC is offering discount to property owners for settling their dues in time

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) will start imposing 2% penalty on those who fail to clear their half-yearly property tax dues for the 2023-24 fiscal before June 30.

A civic official, said the NMC is offering discount to property owners for settling their dues in time.

“Those who fail to make the most of the discount scheme will be penalised. The NMC issues tax demand at the beginning of the financial year and is divided in two sections — first and second-half of the financial year. The taxes for the first six months have to be cleared in 90 days. Effectively, June 30 is the last day for the bills generated in April. If taxes are paid after this date then a two per cent penalty will be applied on the first installment amount,” the official said.

The official added that due date for the next six months is December-end and those failing to pay the bill will be fined 2% of the pending dues from January 1. “The defaulters of the year 2022-23 are being charged 2% compounding interest on the outstanding amount,” the official said.

The NMC had collected Rs 187 crore towards property tax as against its target of Rs 185 crore for the year 2022-23. The civic body had given 8% rebate on payment of property tax for the year 2023-24 in the month of April. The rebate was 6% percent for dues cleared in May and 3% if the money was paid in June.

In April, around 1.3 lakh property owners cleared their dues and made use of the eight per cent rebate. The figure, however, went down to 29,000 in May. So far in June, around 30,000 people have made use of the three per cent discount scheme.

The civic body has appealed to the property owners to settle their dues accordingly by referring to the index number even if they have not received the demand notice. “Citizens can log on to http://nmctax.in/ or http://nmc.gov.in/ to check their dues and make payments,” the official said.

An NMC official said messages, SMS and WhatsApp, have been sent to the property tax owners on their registered mobile numbers reminding them about the amount to be paid towards property tax. “These messages are auto-generated and have so far been sent twice. The message also has a payment link using which the property owners can make the payments online,” the official said.

Other than the rebate offered on payment of property tax dues, the civic body also gives discount on installation of solar projects for water heating and power generation, rain-water harvesting, reusage of waste-water, electric vehicle charging station.
