Property owners hold protest in Chandigarh sector 17

The protesters said if the administration does not revise the SOPs, property owners will be forced to take to the streets.

On the call of Chandigarh Property Shareholders Welfare Association, property owners of Chandigarh held a protest against the standard operating procedures (SOPs) released by the UT administration to implement the order of the Supreme Court against apartmentalisation in the city.

Supported by all three political parties, BJP, Congress and AAP, representatives of the Builders Association, Chandigarh, and many market welfare associations gathered at Sector 17 with placards and marked a “black day”.

The protesters said if the administration does not revise the SOPs, property owners will be forced to take to the streets.

“The SOPs are not based on the order of the Supreme Court. Nowhere in the judgment, it is written that there should be a ban on share-wise registry imposed by the UT. Secondly, the Supreme Court had given the order for sectors 1 to 30, while the administration has imposed the ban for entire city,” the protesters said.

The protestors said, “The Supreme Court in its judgment had said if three strangers apply for a plan of a house, think seriously before sanctioning it. Apart from this, the registry was not stayed anywhere in the judgment. After the SOPs, any shareholder will neither be able to sell his property outside his family nor will he be able to make a will,” they said.
