The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has started disconnecting the water supply lines of over 500 big residential consumers, who have outstanding dues of over Rs 3 crore.
NMC officials said they have disconnected the water supply lines of 80 defaulters and the remaining disconnections will be done in phases.
With the current fiscal year approaching its end, the water supply department of the civic body has stepped up its action to recover dues from the big defaulters.
NMC has set a water tax collection target of Rs 75 crore for the current financial year, and it has only collected Rs 35 crore so far. The civic body still has to recover Rs 40 crore over the next two-and-a-half months.
Revenue collection through water tax had witnessed a drop in December-end of the current financial year.
Therefore, NMC commissioner Chandrakant Pulkundwar has directed the NMC’s water supply department to intensify its drive of recovering water tax from the tax defaulters.
Accordingly, NMC has started visiting the houses of property tax defaulters and snapping water connections of those refusing to pay the overdue amount.
Moreover, NMC has also been keeping all divisional offices open on Saturdays and Sundays since January 13 to facilitate taxpayers to clear their dues on weekends.
NMC wants to collect water tax dues as much as possible as only two-and-a-half months are left for the end of the current financial year.
