Tata Steel, in partnership with constructsteel, the steel construction market-development initiative of the World Steel Association, has launched an innovative steel-based Zero Energy Building (ZEB) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
The building, which spans 1,836 sq. ft., was completed in a mere 3.5 months utilizing advanced light-gauge steel frame (LGSF) technology. It is engineered to generate as much energy as it consumes, thereby achieving net-zero energy usage on an annual basis.
The facility was inaugurated by Tata Steel’s CEO, T V Narendran, and incorporates high-performance glazing, insulated walls, and rooftop solar panels to produce clean energy, representing a significant advancement in India’s commitment to sustainable, energy-efficient infrastructure.
Additionally, it includes building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), rainwater harvesting systems, and low-flow water fixtures to enhance resource efficiency. CEO Narendran emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “The steel-based zero energy building reflects the future of construction.” The LGSF technology facilitates quicker, more resilient construction with minimal environmental repercussions, providing a blueprint for the replication of energy-efficient, low-carbon buildings throughout India.
