The city corporation has released the ‘approximate hike’ in property tax for about five zones to help people understand it better.
An Adyar resident living in a house ranging between 1,201 sq ft and 1,800 sq ft and paying half yearly property tax of Rs 1461 will now have to pay a maximum of Rs 2,922.
A resident of the same zone living in a house that is less than 600 sq ft will now pay Rs 462 against the earlier Rs 308.
In Alandur, residents paying Rs 320 for a 600 sq ft home will now pay Rs 400 and those paying Rs 825 for a 1,201 sq ft-1,800 sq ft home will pay a maximum of Rs 1,444. Residents of Madhavaram will pay Rs 275 for a 600 sq ft home and a maximum of Rs 2,310 for homes between 1,201 sq ft and 1,900 sq ft.
In Thiruvottiyur, it will be Rs 264 for 600 sq ft homes and a maximum of Rs 1,288 for those between 1,201 sq ft and 1,800 sq ft. In Anna Nagar, it will be between Rs 461 and Rs 2,970.
Residents, however, seek normalization of rates. V Rama Rao, a resident-activist from Nanganallur, said the government should ensure same tax slabs for all zones.
Vishu Mahajan, corporation deputy commissioner (revenue and finance) told TOI that compared to tier I and tier II cities, the cities in Tamil Nadu paid less tax.
“This hike is not just progressive but also equitable. Even after this raise, we will continue to pay less tax than other cities in the country,” he said.
