The municipal corporation (MC) has served notices to 400 owners of residential properties to pay their dues of Rs 1. 20 crore or watch their water connection getting snapped.
Sources said the move was recently deliberated among senior MC officials during meetings that culminated with the tax branch writing to the water supply wing of the engineering department to carry out the action. The engineering department has now started checking documents to cut water connections.
“As we cannot seal residential buildings, like we do in case of commercial buildings or properties, the authority has decided to disconnect water connections of house tax defaulters. We have already issued notices. The defaulters are not coming forward, so we are left with no option but to take some strict action,” an official said.
Over 2,300 residential properties owe Rs 4 crore tax to the MC. Arecent survey of the MC had revealed that posh areas of the northern part are the biggest defaulters in residential category.
In terms of dues, Sector 15 had topped the list with Rs 39. 86 lakh. Next came Sector 8 with dues of Rs 31. 02 lakh and then Sector 22 with Rs 27. 96 lakh.
The number of properties to be taxed had increased to 1. 29 lakh after 15,000 houses of colonies were added to the list.
Out of the total, around 29,000 properties are in commercial category and the remaining of around one lakh under residential segment.
