The Nashik Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) move of giving 5% rebate in property tax to people paying the entire amount for the financial year 2022-23, and approaching big taxpayers and asking them to avail of the scheme is yielding results as the civic body has managed to collect Rs 24 crore towards property tax — the highest property tax collection in April by the civic body in any fiscal.
Earlier, the highest property tax collection of the NMC was Rs 15 crore in April 2019. In April 2022, the NMC had collected only Rs 7 crore through property tax.
As per the rebate scheme, people paying their complete tax in April will get a 5% discount, while it is 3% and 2% for those making the payment in May and June, respectively.
“The NMC has not been able to distribute property tax bills for the current financial year due to scarcity of manpower. Hence, the civic body has appealed to the taxpayers to generate the bills online and make the payments,” an NMC official said.
“We are preparing a database of the property tax payers so that we can inform them about the tax amount for the financial year through SMS. So far, the property tax department has collected contact numbers of around 2 lakh taxpayers,” the official said.
At Rs 149 crore, the NMC registered its highest property tax collection during the last financial year. Earlier, the previous highest property tax collection was Rs 141 crore during the financial year 2019-20. In 2020-21, the civic body had collected property tax worth Rs 112 crore.
Meanwhile, the NMC has appealed to the property tax payers to clear their property tax dues for the current financial year in May and get a 3% rebate on the total amount.
