The civic administration has prolonged the property tax amnesty scheme until February 16. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has gathered approximately Rs 713 crore from tax defaulters over a two-month period under the amnesty scheme, which concluded on January 15. “The response to the scheme was positive.

Factors such as the elections influenced collections. More property owners can take advantage of this initiative, hence we have opted to extend it,” Ram stated while addressing reporters following the Standing Committee meeting. Ram further mentioned that the civic administration is in the process of finalizing the municipal budget for 2026–27 and is expected to present it by the end of the month.

Among the various amnesty schemes introduced in previous years, the highest collection was noted in 2020–21, when Rs 485.67 crore was amassed over a four-month duration. In the current financial year, approximately 1.24 lakh property owners have benefited from the scheme. A total of Rs 2,557.95 crore has been deposited into the municipal coffers through property tax collections thus far this year.

Despite opposition from citizen groups, the civic body initiated the amnesty scheme for property tax defaulters. According to the proposal, the scheme was enacted from November 15, 2025, to January 15, 2026, providing a 75% waiver on the penalty amount. This decision was made as the 2% monthly compound-like penalty surpassed the original tax amount.

Under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, a 2% monthly penalty is imposed if property tax is not settled by the designated deadline. Consequently, property tax arrears, including penalties, have reached significant levels. Ram, regarding the municipal budget for 2026–27, indicated that the administration is in the final stages of preparation and anticipates presenting it by the end of the month. He also noted that the administration intends to offer training to newly elected members.
