On Thursday, Mumbai’s civic authority commenced e-auction proceedings for six properties due to the non-payment of property tax totaling Rs 455.48 crore. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation also issued final notices of 21 days to two additional defaulters, as stated in a release.
Despite multiple notifications, the relevant property owners have not settled their outstanding dues amounting to Rs 455,48,94,374, which includes penalties, leading the corporation to initiate the e-auction process for six of these properties. The identified properties for e-auction are situated in Goregaon (West), Bandra (West), Dahisar, Parel, Mazgaon, and Malad-Kurar village, the release indicated.
In relation to two other properties located in the Fort area of south Mumbai, the owners have been given extended notices of 21 days to settle their pending dues; otherwise, auction proceedings will commence, the release further noted. The two Fort properties consist of a residential-cum-hospital facility with tax arrears of Rs 21.03 crore and a commercial property with outstanding dues of Rs 13.47 crore.
As part of a targeted initiative against significant tax defaulters, the civic body’s Assessment and Collection Department executed attachment and distraint actions on eight properties throughout the city. These properties encompass open plots, residential land, commercial units, industrial sites, and a hotel, as mentioned in the release.
This action was undertaken under the applicable provisions of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, specifically Sections 203 to 206, as stated. “In accordance with the procedure, movable assets located on the premises will be attached and auctioned first. Should any dues remain unpaid, the immovable property will be auctioned in line with statutory provisions and in adherence to the Bombay High Court’s interim order in Writ Petition No 2592 of 2013,” an official remarked.
