Metro project to link Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports approved

The Maharashtra Cabinet Infrastructure Committee approved a 35-km Metro project aimed at linking the Mumbai and Navi Mumbai international airports, with an estimated expenditure exceeding Rs 22,000 crore. This corridor will feature 20 stations, comprising six underground and 14 elevated stations.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, the land acquisition for the project, which spans 30.7 hectares, is projected to cost Rs 388 crore. The infrastructure committee, a high-level ministerial group, sanctioned the Metro Line 8 project, which is estimated to cost Rs 22,862 crore.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has instructed that all land acquisition and necessary approvals for the Metro project—from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to Navi Mumbai International Airport—be completed within six months, with construction to be finalized within three years following the approvals. Of the total 35-km Metro line, 9.25 km will be underground, extending from Mumbai Airport Terminal 2 to Ghatkopar East, while 24.63 km will be elevated, stretching from Ghatkopar West to Navi Mumbai Airport Terminal 2.

Fadnavis also directed the relevant departments to expedite the extension of the Samruddhi Expressway along the Nagpur-Gondia and Bhandara-Gadchiroli routes, ensuring that there are no delays in the projects. In light of the forthcoming Kumbh Mela, the committee has also approved the Nashik city ring road project, which will cover 66.15 km at a cost of Rs 3,954 crore.

Additionally, the panel has authorized the upgrade of the 85.76-km Navegaon More-Konsari-Mulchera-Hedri-Surjagad highway in Gadchiroli district to a four-lane cement concrete road to enhance mineral transportation.
