Chandigarh has been chosen as one of the 152 urban local bodies (ULBs) from 26 states and three union territories that are taking part in the pilot phase of the ‘Naksha’ project. The area covered in Chandigarh comprises five villages — Sarangpur, Burail, Kajheri, Palsora, and Attawa — along with Sectors 2 to 17 (excluding Sector 13), totaling an area of 30.61 square kilometers and a population of 1.48 lakh.
The necessity for the ‘Naksha’ project stems from persistent issues such as poor maintenance of urban land records, swift urbanization, the rising economic value of land, frequent ownership conflicts, obstacles in infrastructure development, challenges in property transactions and access to credit, as well as the absence of transparency, accessibility, and accuracy in current land information systems.
To tackle these issues, the ‘Naksha’ project seeks to digitize and modernize urban land records, thereby fostering transparency, improving administrative efficiency, and stimulating economic growth. Anticipated results of the project include the establishment of precise and current digital urban land records, a decrease in land disputes through enhanced legal clarity, more effective urban planning, financial fortification of ULBs, streamlined property transactions, better credit facilitation, and increased public confidence in governance.
The initiative also aims to reduce corruption and fraud, thereby creating a favorable environment for real estate and infrastructure investment and enhancing the overall ease of doing business.
