4-laning of Thirumangalam–Vadugapatti stretch set for Dec 2025 completion

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in the Madurai region is progressing towards the completion of the four-laning of the 36-km Thirumangalam–Vadugapatti stretch, which is anticipated to be finished by December 2025.

This project, valued at Rs 554 crore, is part of the Madurai–Kollam greenfield National Highway 744 and commenced in March 2023. According to officials, the improved link road is expected to decrease travel time, improve safety, and facilitate the transport of goods.

The alignment begins at the T. Pudupatti bypass in Thirumangalam, traverses through Kalupatti and Kunathur, and covers 12 km within the Thirumangalam taluk. The project encompasses 16 vehicular underpasses and two pedestrian subways located at Aalampatti and M. Subbulapuram, both of which have been identified as accident-prone areas.

Originally scheduled for completion by February 2025, the project has encountered delays due to challenges related to land acquisition and local protests. Various stakeholders, including the Tamil Nadu Lorry Owners Federation, have requested that NHAI ensure sufficient lighting and truck parking facilities along the corridor. Once the road is operational, it is projected to enhance connectivity and improve logistics efficiency in southern Tamil Nadu.
