Workers are ready to leave if work doesn’t start: Pune realtors

A recent survey by Credai revealed that nearly 46% of the 47,500 workers in the limits of Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporations and PMRDA would want to leave for home, especially if work did not start.

City-based realtors on Saturday said migrant workers involved in the construction sector wanted to go home if the work did not begin at some scale.

A recent survey by Credai revealed that nearly 46% of the 47,500 workers in the limits of Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporations and PMRDA would want to leave for home, especially if work did not start.

“I want to go home and meet my children. I sat here doing nothing for the last 45 days,” Durgesh Singh, a worker from Uttar Pradesh, said.

“We have told them if they go, it would be difficult to come back immediately. They are scared they will have to be in 14-day quarantine,” Jayant Gosavi, senior vice-president of operations at Gera Developments, said.

“The workers are noticing the raw materials are not coming. I am afraid that more will line up to go back home,” Suhas Merchant, the president of Credai Pune Metro, said. Atul Chordia, director of Pancshil, said his 3,000 workers across six sites wanted to stay because work had begun in full-swing.
