Volvo CE Introduces its First Midsize Electric Wheel Excavator Prototype

Volvo CE  introduced the EX03, a product of the Volvo Concept Lab and its first electric prototype vehicle in the midsize excavator category. “This prototype is a significant step forward in the evolution of medium electric construction machines,” says Inwoo Kim, program manager for Advanced Engineering at Volvo CE. “As our first electric excavator concept in the midsize range, we have been quick to build and expand on our existing electromobility technology.”

The EX03 follows in the footsteps of Volvo’s EX02 concept electric excavator unveiled in 2017. Although Volvo isn’t planning to bring the EX03 to market for now, it is considering testing a similar version in customer pilots. Volvo is also taking preorders for the ECR25 electric excavator and L25 electric wheel loader that are under development for commercial use.

The EX03 uses a battery pack from Volvo Trucks that provides performance similar to a comparable diesel model, but with low noise, zero exhaust emissions, and reduced maintenance needs. The EX03 also sports an innovative large video screen embedded in its backside that’s usable in three configurations. One displays a real-time video stream from the machine’s front so vehicles behind it can see ahead. The screen can also display text-based alerts to workers, and display a safety communication livestream that lets operators make eye contact with pedestrians and workers for enhanced safety.
