Tamil Nadu govt forms SIT to probe fraudulent property registrations

The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to probe fraudulent property registrations in the past.

The SIT, headed by an ex-IAS officer, will investigate various malpractices such as fraudulent property registrations and impersonations. It will also probe fraudulent registration of land belonging to the Hindu religious and charitable endowments (HR and CE) and revenue departments, waterbodies and properties of the Wakf Board in the past.

In an order, registration secretary B Jothi Nirmalasamy said the SIT comprising a retired IAS officer and two members would also inquire into the revenue loss to the state government by registration officials. While one member would be a senior counsel of the Madras high court, the second member would be an additional inspector general of registrations, who would also be the convenor of the SIT, the order said.

When contacted, Jothi Nirmalasamy told that the order was in line with the government’s assurance to the general public that the properties that had been fraudulently registered in the past would be returned to the original landlords, who were victims of such illegal land transfers.
