The Public Works Department (PWD) in Delhi is poised to convert vacant land beneath 93 city flyovers into functional community areas, which will feature vending zones, shaded waiting areas, restrooms, and recreational spaces.
A consultant will be appointed shortly to develop detailed project reports (DPRs) over the forthcoming nine months, which will present innovative, sustainable, and site-specific design solutions.
This initiative seeks to transform these underutilized areas into lively public assets that enhance Delhi’s urban landscape and elevate the quality of life for its residents. Officials have pointed to successful examples at flyovers in Lajpat Nagar and Moti Nagar, where parks have been established.
Key locations identified include the New RTR flyover (2,650 meters), Rani Jhansi (2,000 meters), and AIIMS (1,640 meters). The DPRs will encompass architectural designs, signage strategies, and financial models that incorporate revenue from kiosks, parking, and advertising to guarantee ongoing maintenance.
Only firms with a proven track record in large-scale urban development projects will be permitted to bid for the consultancy contract.
