The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has issued notices to 82 buildings deemed ‘dangerous’ during its pre-monsoon safety assessment. Civic officials indicated that there has been a notable decrease in the number of such structures compared to the previous two years.
They credited this reduction to building owners who either carried out repairs or chose to demolish their properties. As per PCMC officials, 132 unsafe buildings were identified in 2024, while 125 were noted in 2023. A senior official from PCMC stated that the buildings were assessed based on their current condition, leading to notices being sent to the respective owners.
The structures were categorized into four groups: those requiring immediate demolition, those needing urgent evacuation and repair, buildings that require major repairs without evacuation, and those that only need minor repairs. “Of the 82 buildings identified this year, four were found to be in an extremely dangerous state and were designated for immediate demolition. Owners of 11 buildings were ordered to vacate their premises and perform urgent repairs. Furthermore, 16 structures require major repairs, while the owners of 51 were instructed to conduct minor repair work,” the official remarked.
According to the building permission department, nine of the previously flagged structures have already been repaired or demolished following the notices, as confirmed during the most recent inspection. “We have also taken measures regarding our own properties. One dilapidated civic school building has already been demolished, and another such structure is scheduled for demolition soon,” he added. The civic body conducts surveys of dilapidated structures each year before the monsoon, and those found to be in poor condition are served notices.
