In the final detailed project report (DPR) for Madurai metro, a total of 27 metro stations are planned in a total length of 32 km rail track between Thirumangalam and Othakadai, said CMRL MD M A Siddique at a multi-department meeting held at district collectorate on Wednesday.
Earlier, a total of 18 stations had been planned in a total length of 30 km.
The CMRL MD said in the 32km stretch, five km of underground track and 27 km of elevated corridor are planned.
Among the 27 metro stations planned, three stations will be underground metro stations –all three in the central zone of the city, said the MD. “On an average, for every one km a station is planned on the elevated stretch. For every 1.5 km, a station will be set up in the underground stretch,” added the MD.
The DPR for both the Madurai metro and Coimbatore metro will be submitted on July 15. “Once construction work begins, the Madurai metro project will be completed in four years,” said the MD.
District collector M S Sangeetha, corporation commissioner K J Praveen Kumar and senior officials from revenue department and HR and CE department participated in the meeting.
