The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has issued notices to an additional 500 property tax defaulters, each of whom owes more than Rs 1 lakh in dues. They have been allotted 21 days to settle the arrears, after which warrants will be issued against them.
In the last two weeks, the property tax department has already dispatched notices to 450 defaulters, bringing the total number of notices served in recent days to 950. According to regulations, annual property tax must be paid by December 31, after which a penalty of 2% per month is imposed. However, many taxpayers have failed to meet the deadline, leading the civic body to take action.
NMC had established a property tax collection target of Rs 270 crore for the financial year 2025-26 but has only managed to collect Rs 218 crore thus far. The corporation now needs to recover Rs 52 crore in the remaining 40 days to achieve its target.
This year’s collection is also Rs 7 crore less than the amount collected during the same period last year. Civic officials have attributed the shortfall to staff being assigned to election duties over the past three months, which hindered tax recovery efforts. With the elections now concluded, staff have returned to their respective departments and have resumed the year-end recovery initiative.
To enhance collections in the final phase of the financial year, NMC commissioner Manisha Khatri recently convened a meeting with the property tax department and divisional officers from all six divisions, directing them to accelerate recovery from defaulters.
