The municipal authority intends to take stringent measures against property tax defaulters who have failed to settle their dues over the past several years, despite receiving multiple notices. In the initial phase, the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) will auction the properties belonging to 73 property tax defaulters who have not cleared their dues following the issuance of confiscation warrants.
Earlier this March, NMC issued warrants to 425 property tax defaulters, providing a 21-day ultimatum to pay their dues or risk property confiscation. These defaulters have left unpaid dues exceeding Rs1 lakh. Following the issuance of the warrants, at least 10 defaulters made full or partial payments of their property tax to the municipal authority. The NMC has now commenced actions against these defaulters in phases.
In the first phase, a list has been released indicating the auction of properties belonging to 73 major defaulters, each with tax dues exceeding Rs 1 lakh that have been outstanding for several years. Among the 73 defaulters, 18 are from the Cidco division and nine from the Satpur division. The auction is scheduled for July 2. There are 10 defaulters in Nashik East and eight in the Nashik West division. The properties of these defaulters will be auctioned on July 3.
The auction for properties belonging to defaulters from the Panchavati (18) and Nashik Road (10) divisions is set for July 4. NMC currently has over 1.5 lakh property tax defaulters, with pending dues exceeding Rs250 crore. In the past three months, NMC has issued first and second notices to over 5,000 defaulters, resulting in warrants being issued to 425 major defaulters.
Additionally, the civic body launched an amnesty scheme for property tax defaulters during the October to January period of the last financial year 2024-25, offering rebates of up to 90% on penalty amounts for outstanding dues. NMC imposes a 2% monthly interest rate on property tax dues, along with charges for issuing notices to defaulters. During this period, over 60,000 defaulters took advantage of the amnesty scheme, leading to a waiver of Rs30 crore in penalties on outstanding dues.
The NMC collected around Rs 60 crore through the amnesty scheme from Oct-Jan. However, many defaulters failed to avail of the window.
