NHAI has allocated `331 crore for the development of multi-level elevated corridors near the upcoming Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT) at Panjapur in Trichy city. A new flyover will facilitate uninterrupted vehicular movement on the Trichy-Madurai National Highway (NH), connecting southern districts with Trichy and Chennai.
A shorter flyover has also been approved on the Thanjavur-Karur Semi-ring Road, intersecting the Trichy-Madurai NH at Panjapur. Both flyovers will handle vehicular movement simultaneously on two different levels.
With various infrastructure facilities planned in Panjapur by Trichy Corporation, including a new bus terminus, truck terminal, Tidel Park, regional Olympic training academy, and a wholesale vegetable market, the NHAI Trichy Project Implementation Unit (PIU) emphasizes the importance of flyovers to prevent traffic bottlenecks. The NHAI will develop a 3km long flyover on Trichy-Madurai NH, the longest ever on a highway passing through Trichy city.
The 4-lane elevated structure between Koraiyar River bridge and Vinayaga Nagar in Panjapur will allow Madurai and Chennai-bound vehicles to bypass the floating population in the new bus terminus and vegetable market.
A separate 750-meter-long flyover is sanctioned on the Thanjavur-Karur Semi-ring Road, facilitating seamless traffic between Jeeyapuram on Karur NH and Thuvakudi on Thanjavur NH. At the intersection, the Trichy-Madurai NH flyover will operate on the first level, while the shorter one will be build at a higher elevation.
“Adequate land has been provided by Trichy Corporation for the improvement work. Our priority is to isolate traffic on the Trichy-Madurai highway without disrupting local traffic. The layout of the new bus terminus was incorporated into the flyover designs,” stated a senior NHAI official. Eight-lane carriageways will be developed to allow a hassle-free approach to the new bus terminus.
Additionally, two subways will be constructed for pedestrians to safely cross the highway and reach the IBT and wholesale vegetable market. The new flyovers will eliminate two identified black spots near Panjapur. “A tender has been issued. We aim to commence the works by around April 2024, with a completion deadline of 18 months,” added the official.
