Material seized from 347 buildings that ignored ‘stop-work’ notices

Among the 347 buildings where the civic body's officials seized construction material, the highest number, 69, was in Anna Nagar, followed by 44 in Tondiarpet, 39 in Perungudi and 38 in Madhavaram.

Greater Chennai Corporation in the past one week has seized construction material from 347 buildings as the builders had failed to comply with the ‘stop work’ notices issued by the civic body for plan deviations.

Among the 347 buildings where the civic body’s officials seized construction material, the highest number, 69, was in Anna Nagar, followed by 44 in Tondiarpet, 39 in Perungudi and 38 in Madhavaram.

Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi said that all stakeholders should ensure that a culture is developed so that at the beginning of the construction stage, all deviations are identified and stopped.

“If we do this at the beginning itself, it would cause less pain and agony to the people residing there, than to get it demolished later on,” the commissioner said.

He also warned that any building that is found by corporation officals to have been completed with deviations in the approved plan will not be issued a completion certificate.

This will also ensure that the said building will not be able to get the all-important Metrowater connection.

“It will have to be demolished anyway. Such drives will help to curb this at an early stage. People cannot get away with deviations to the approved plan during construction,” he said.

The corporation in addition has issued 245 ‘stop work’ notices, and 203 ‘lock-and seal’ notices. It has also sealed 14 buildings.
