Margao civic body has house tax arrears of Rs 16 crore

“The bills are being served to those who have not paid the house tax. Demand notices are issued to those who fail to pay the dues within the stipulated time,” Rane said in his written reply.

The total outstandings in house tax of Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has amounted to nearly Rs 16 crore, said urban development minister Vishwajit Rane while replying to a legislative assembly question tabled on Thursday. The question was put forth by Margao MLA Digambar Kamat.

“The bills are being served to those who have not paid the house tax. Demand notices are issued to those who fail to pay the dues within the stipulated time,” Rane said in his written reply.

On criteria adopted for collecting house tax from commercial establishments and residential premises, Rane said that house tax is assessed based on the area and rates fixed by the council from time to time.

“However, if the commercial premises are given on rent, the house tax is assessed based on the amount of rent,” the reply added.

The MMC is accepting online payment of house tax apart from the counter set up in its office premises and door-to-door collection by using POS machines.
