After a long struggle of two years, the Ludhiana municipal corporation is finally going to start installation of unique identity number (UID) plates with QR code on properties in the city.
Every plate will cost around Rs 60, which will be borne under the Smart City Mission and the public need not to pay anything. Total cost of this project has now gone up to around Rs 5.75 crore.
But officials are still not clear about 35,000 UID plates which were installed a few years back in some of the areas as these plates don’t have QR codes.
Proposed two years back, this project is important for the city as most of the properties have already been assigned UID number. Once installed outside every property, officials can check whether owner of the property has cleared the dues or not by simply scanning the QR code.
The officials had to float tenders thrice for hiring a firm. Last time they were told to float tenders for fourth time as well due to cost variation. But the officials convinced the senior officials in the local bodies department that it would waste a lot of time and since the estimates for the project were prepared long back, the cost has increased. An aluminium plate will be installed outside the properties as soon as the MC hands over the work order to the selected firm.
Recently, residents had posted pictures on social media about UID number plates installed by Jalandhar MC and questioning whether Ludhiana MC will start anything on these lines.
MC commissioner Shena Aggarwal said, “We are going to start the installation of UID plates as soon as we receive an approval to the resolution of the technical advisory committee.”
