Land acquisition complete for Peroorkada Flyover, construction set to begin by Jan

Land acquisition for Peroorkada flyover project is complete and the district administration’s revenue wing has served notices on the landowners for eviction. Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala (RBDCK), the implementing agency of the project, is set to invite the tender for demolition of the buildings within two weeks, and the construction tender is expected in Jan next year.

According to VK Prasanth, MLA, who is overseeing the project, all the land required for the project has been acquired, and the demolition of the acquired buildings will begin soon. “The tender for the demolition will be called within two weeks. The demolition will take a month to complete. After that, the construction tender will be floated to ensure that the construction will begin in this financial year itself,” he said. The flyover, starting near Peroorkada Lourdes Church and ending near Vazhuthacaud St Jude Church, spans 874m. The project cost is estimated at Rs 106.76 crore. For the flyover construction, requiring approximately 4 acres, Rs 55.42 crore has been allocated. A sum of Rs 43.39 crore was earmarked for land acquisition. The flyover’s design aims to minimally impact commercial establishments and residences.

A total of 83 landowners at Peroorkada have been compensated for the acquisition of their land. The KIIFB-funded flyover is aimed at alleviating the severe traffic congestion at the busy Peroorkada junction. The flyover has been a long-standing demand from motorists and daily commuters, as four major roads, including those leading to Nedumangad and Kudappanakunnu, converge at this junction. The current traffic management using signals has proven insufficient to resolve the bottleneck.

Public works department minister PA Mohamed Riyas had laid the foundation stone for the project in Nov 2021. To accommodate the road widening, about 25 shops on either side of the road will need to be demolished.
