Kanpur has ranked 10th in the top 10 Smart Cities, the list of which was released recently by the Union ministry of housing and urban development under the Smart City Mission. Earlier, Kanpur ranked 14th in the list released in April.
“In state ranking, Kanpur has secured the third place, while Agra (2nd in national rank) stood first and Varanasi (5th in nation) ranked second,” said municipal commissioner Shiv Sharanappa GN. He expressed happiness and satisfaction over the city’s 10th ranking in the country and hoped that Kanpur Nagar would further improve its ranking as the several ongoing projects will be completed soon.”
Kanpur Municipal corporation sources informed that for the first time in the city, a provision of Rs 950 crore was made under the Smart City Mission in 2018. So far development works worth Rs 750 crore have been completed.
“The Smart City Mission plan was to be completed in March 2023, although the deadline has been extended to June to complete the pending projects,” said the sources.
According to sources a Sports Complex was developed at the Palika Stadium, beautification of Nana Rao Park was done, and a major renovation exercise was carried out at the Swimming Pool of Nana Rao Park, a Recharge Center for Electric Buses at Fazalganj was built and a Nagrik Suvidha Kendra has also been developed in the city.
“A convention centre in Chunniganj worth Rs 95 crore, a multi-level parking for Rs 50 crore on the VIP Road and other projects are to be completed,” said the KMC sources.
These development works have helped improve the city’s ranking in the Smart City Mission. The city ranked 18th in February 2023, 16th in March and 14th in April, said sources.
The commissioner, meanwhile, further said that the Smart City mission is being implemented in the city. “The convention centre will be built in July, and Kanpur’s ranking will further improve in the coming days,” he said.
