On Tuesday, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized the critical importance of infrastructure development for India, stating his goal is to increase the rate of highway construction to 100 kilometers per day. During his address at AIMA’s 10th National Leadership Conclave, he confidently predicted that within the next 18 months, India’s road infrastructure will surpass that of the United States.
‘Infrastructure development is crucial for India… I am committed to accelerate the highway construction to 100 km per day,’ he remarked. The Minister of Road Transport and Highways also announced plans for the construction of 25,000 kilometers of two and four-lane highways in the coming years.
According to Gadkari, there is an abundance of funding available for highway projects. The pace of highway construction in the nation reached an unprecedented 37 kilometers per day during the fiscal year 2020-21. The highways ministry completed 10,237 kilometers in 2019-20, 13,435 kilometers in 2020-21, 10,457 kilometers in 2021-22, 10,331 kilometers in 2022-23, and 12,349 kilometers in 2023-24.
The minister further stated that the Union government is engaged in infrastructure initiatives valued at Rs 1 lakh crore aimed at transforming Delhi. Gadkari also emphasized the importance of collaboration and transparency.
