Construction of Gurugram Metro, the new corridor planned in the city, will begin on 1 May 2025, said chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Tuesday, adding that the project will be completed in four years.
The metro line, spanning 28.5km, will have 27 stations. The corridor will be launched with three coaches per train and will be increased to six coaches later.
Saini held a crucial meeting to review the metro expansion plans and construction of new Civil Hospital in the city. “Under the Gurugram Metro Rail Limited, the metro will be extended from Millennium City Centre to the Railway Station, Sector-22 and Cyber City,” the CM said. The meeting focused on enhancing the city’s infrastructure to better serve its residents.
The project — estimated to cost Rs 5452.72 crore — will be funded by both the central govt (Rs 896.19 crore) and the Haryana govt (Rs 4,556.53 crore).
The metro will operate on standard gauge and use communication-based train control signalling, with a maximum speed of 80 km/h.
During the meeting, officials informed the CM that the metro expansion work is expected to be completed in four years.
Saini emphasised the importance of “minimising inconvenience” to the public during construction and ensuring smooth traffic flow.
He stressed the need for a “robust plan” to ensure the infrastructure’s longevity and benefits to the people.
The detailed project report for the metro rail line was approved by both the Haryana and central govts.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project in Rewari on Feb 16, 2024.
The project will also include the construction of five underpasses and flyovers.
In addition to the metro expansion, the meeting also discussed the construction of a new 700-bed civil hospital in Gurgaon.
The tender for this project, estimated to cost around Rs 990 crore, will open on Friday. The new hospital, which will take three years to complete, will replace the old structure demolished in Dec 2022 after multiple roof-collapse incidents.
The new 13-storey hospital will feature two basements, a ground floor and 11 upper floors, equipped with 60 ICUs, 12 operating theatres and a helipad for emergencies.
“The adjacent school building area of 1.67 acres will be handed over to the health department, increasing the total area available for the hospital to 9.78 acres. The foundation stone for the hospital is expected to be laid in the first week of March,” the CM said.
The CM instructed the officials to ensure the new school building is designed as a multi-story structure and clarified that the school should continue operating in its current building until the new one is ready.
Industrial Cities Initiative
The meeting also addressed the ruling party’s manifesto resolution to establish 10 industrial cities.
The Panchgram scheme, along with the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway, is under consideration.
Saini instructed officials to develop these cities near major highways to provide employment opportunities and attract investments.
These cities will feature industrial, residential, infrastructure and commercial activities.
He said that this plan should be prepared and brought during the upcoming budget session of the state assembly.
