A criminal case for death due to negligence has been filed against a project director and a supervisor from National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), after a 34-year-old daily-wage worker was run over on August 24 night at Tippasandra handpost, on a stretch of Nelamangala-Kunigal Road that was allegedly poorly lit.

Earlier, locals had protested at least three times, demanding the installation of high-mast lights as there were repeated accidents on the particular junction. However, the lighting was not installed, police said.

Following a complaint filed by Venkatalakshmamma, a resident of Tippasandra whose husband Venkatarama was killed in the August 24 accident, jurisdictional Kudur police registered an FIR and identified NHAI project director DineshKumar Ansari and NHAI supervisor Haribabu as accused. The third accused is the car driver.

The trio has been booked under IPC section 304A for causing death due to negligence.

ADGP (traffic and road safety) Alok Kumar told they will continue to book criminal cases against officials whose negligence contributes to fatal accidents.

“Some time ago, four persons died in a road accident near Sakleshpur and we booked the contractor concerned under IPC section 304A. It was evident that construction work on the stretch where the accident had occurred was going on for a long time and the contributory negligence of the contractor ended in the fatal accident. When it comes to the Kudur accident, we had asked NHAI officials to install proper lights on the particular stretch following repeated accidents,” Kumar said.
